Snares warning on beach

Dog owners are being warned this week that several pets have been trapped in snares while walking near Poppit Sands.

Local dog owners have found seven slip snares apparently set to catch rabbits in the dunes.

“One small dog was caught by its neck and someone found a dead cat,” said local resident Marie Underwood.

“People who are setting these need to be aware that they can be lethal to pets. Luckily the people I saw whose dog was trapped with the noose round its neck were on hand to rescue their animal and it wasn’t seriously harmed but it could have been worse.”

She added: “We have scoured the area and removed seven similar traps and we are keeping a watch every day. Any new ones will be removed. We have also reported this to the police.”
