McKay calls for snares to be banned
NORTH Antrim Sinn Féin MLA Daithí McKay has called for snaring to be banned and accused the DUP Minister Edwin Poots of neglecting this issue of animal cruelty.
Mr McKay was speaking during a debate on the Wildlife & Natural Environment Bill. Speaking in the Assembly Mr McKay said:
“Snares are indiscriminate and often capture animals which they are not intended for such as domestic pets, farm animals and protected wild animals. A complete end to the use of snares would not only end animals, who are not the target, suffering but would be far easier to enforce.
“Sinn Féin will push for an outright ban on snares at the Assembly and bring to an end this unnecessary practice.
“Our members on the Environment Committee will support and bring forward changes to this Bill to ensure that snaring is brought to an end.”
